One of the weirder Reddit threads for the day has got to be this guy that decided to manually add a microSD card slot to his trusty Nexus 5. It’s far from a polished piece of industrial engineering, but he did manage it and it does work. Who ever said we’d never see a Nexus with microSD expansion?
Long story short, the Redditor decided that if Marshmallow was capable of recognizing external memory cards as internal storage, then why not pull the back off his Nexus 5 and add one himself? The solution is as messy as it is simple. He just folded up the internal components to make everything fit and then soldered a microSD card slot on. Simple.
Sockpockets (Reddit)
The coolest part of the whole DIY trick is that no special software mod was required. Once the microSD card adapter was attached, Marshmallow instantly recognized it and the guy has been enjoying expandable storage on his fully functional, if lumpy, Nexus 5. Some commenters wisely suggested 3D printing a new back cover to accommodate the added bulk.
The reason everyone hasn’t been doing this since day one is because it’s a pretty aggressive mod. The guy pulled off the back cover and chopped it in half, flipped the bottom section where the microUSB port is around and MacGyvered a USB OTG solution on a folded up daughter board…after rearranging the speaker and antenna cables. Once all that was accomplished the whole thing was so bulky he had to chuck a TPU case on it to protect everything.
As the modder admitted himself, it was more of a “could I, should I situation”, vowing that if he were to do it again he would just solder a microSD card adapter to the microUSB port and keep it mounted on the outside of the device. As our parents wisely told us, just because we can do something, doesn’t always mean we should do something. In this case tough, I’m sure glad I got to see this done.

During that time, it's hard using internet because I zip by so many towers on the commute and I'd wager that constantly swapping towers results in alot more power drain on the modem. Having the rumored 32GB on board, AND an SD card slot up to 32gb means I can positively load this phone up with movies/things to entertain me on my commute.. I have over 1000 CD's and another 1000 vinyls and I like ripping at at least 192 and mostly 256 so my music takes a lot of space. With the 32gig card I can swap in and out as I like. That's critical for me but it may not be for someone else. Only one Nexus device in history had a microSD slot, do you know which one it is?

While every rule has its exceptions, it's generally fair to say that when Google is serious about something, it tends to stick to its decision. Certainly, microSD cards in Android devices serve as one such example — Google hates those. Alright, perhaps 'hate' is too strong a word, but the search giant has made it clear on several occasions, directly or indirectly, that it feels they are an inferior alternative to flash storage, and one that is prone to misbehaving and causing all kinds of monkey business. When that happens, users typically blame either Android, or the manufacturer of their phone , even though counterfeit/low quality microSD cards are often to blame. So dead serious is Google about microSD cards, that out of the 10 Nexus devices to date (set-top boxes excluded), only one ever had a microSD card slot. Indeed, none of the Nexus tablets have one, and neither does the Nexus 6, nor the Nexus 5 or 4, and not even the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S that precede them all. This leaves us with only one answer — the HTC-made Nexus One . That's right, out of all these devices, only the Nexus One — the very first Nexus device — had the option to expand upon the 512MB that came on board with it. That was all kinds of important, since the card could fetch you up to 32GB on top of that claustrophobic half gig. By the time the Samsung Galaxy Nexus was released (8 months down the line), internal storage had gotten cheaper, so we had 32GB available from the get-go. In short, it's been over 5 years since we last saw Google agree to a microSD card. It's entirely possible that, should it ever come down to Google making the choice, microSD card will become extinct. And it's not just the maker of Android that sees the benefits of ditching the slot — as mentioned, manufacturers do usually bear the brunt of any related complications, not to mention that there's quite some money to be made in selling phones with larger capacity storage. Combined with the ever more ubiquitous cloud, that's enough incentive for handset makers to drop them. Whether we like it, or not.
